Carrot Carnage

Yum.

Turtle skills

I used to think my turtles were kind of dumb because when I gave them something to eat they would grab it and then swim directly into the walls of their aquarium. Now I have realized they actually do this in an attempt to break the food apart into smaller, more edible chunks.

They will also hold it in their mouths and claw at it (away from themselves) in order to tear it apart.

728 turtles found in woman’s home

Yep, a whole bunch of red-eared sliders were found in some lady’s home, intended to be sold at some festival. I guess they are illegal in Washington and Oregon, according to the article.

That house must have stank soooooo bad. They were just stacked around in crates :(

My turtles like carrots better than apples.

Fish and Turtles

Yesterday I bought the turtles a bunch of fish to snack on. Last time I bought them fish, the turtles ate a couple and then very, very slowly worked their way through the rest of them, except for one. This time, I had asked the PetCo guy for six fish, but he gave me around twelve because several were really, really tiny.

The turtles have eaten them all, the only fish surviving is the one that was left from the last bunch.

Little killing machines.

New Dock for the Turtles

The turtles were starting to eat their little dock (a problem I had read about), so it was time to get a new one. I decided to go with a piece of cork bark which I wired up to the side of the aquarium underneath the lamp (otherwise it floats all around). You can see it on the turtlecam. At first the turtles decided to eat it, too, but I figured that just added some fiber to their diet. Eventually they started climbing up on it and now they seem pretty comfortable with it.

I just felt like sharing.
